End of the School Year Class Activities

It is important to celebrate the end of the school year with your students; positive memories have an effect on attitudes of children. Make sure you have some activities lined up for students to enjoy with their classmates. Here are some ideas to get you started!

1.T-Shirt Memories – Have all your students bring in a pre-washed white T-shirt on one of the last days of class. Supply your students with various permanent color markers. Have each student write the grade and class year on the front and back, then have them go around to their classmates to get all their autographs. Encourage students to draw pictures and write favorite sayings on each others’ shirts.

2.Have a “What I want to be when I grow up day” – Have your students come dressed in clothes that represent the profession that interests them. Have them make up posters that represent why they chose this particular profession.

3.Have an Award Ceremony – Be creative and think of fun unique awards to give to your students. You can purchase fun award certificates and then make up your own categories. Try matching them to names of candy bars to make it fun; for example “The Jolly Rancher Award” goes to the class clown. “The LifeSavers Award” goes to the class helper. Have fun with it and be creative!

Field Day Fun – Chicken Relay

Here is another fun field day game for kids! Divide students into teams and give everyone on the team a tennis ball. The tennis balls represent chicken eggs. When the relay begins, the first student on each team puts the “chicken egg” between his/her knees and waddles to a box that has been set up a fixed distance away. The student must get close enough to the box so when he/she releases their knees, the ball falls into the box, which represents the chicken’s nest. The student runs back to the team and tags the next person in line, who then picks up the next egg and waddles off to deposit it in the nest. The relay ends when the last person returns to the team. The first team to finish is the winning team!

Field Day Fun - Water Shoot Out Relay

Field Day - Fun outside game to play on a hot day! Using a high-power water gun, kids try to knock a foam ball off a cone some distance away. For older kids, have teachers or a parent squirting a stream of water back at the kids – they’ll try to squirt the adults defensively and will have a harder time completing their task. Start with the filled water blaster some distance from the starting point in a hoop on the ground. Kids have to run to get their water gun and then replace it in the same hoop – refilling before putting it back.

Field Day Fun - Cone Toss

Another fun Field Day Game! Separate students into teams, give each team one small traffic cone and one beanbag. Line up 3 hoops for each team three to five feet apart at the opposite end of the play area away from the starting line. Competing teams line up relay style behind a starting line. One person from each team holds a small traffic cone inside one of the hoops. On the "go" signal, the first person from each team chooses one of the hoops he/she will toss to and the child with the traffic cone will move to that hoop. The furthest hoop from the catcher is worth 3 points, the middle hoop is worth 2 points and the closest hoop is worth 1 point. The tosser attempts to toss the beanbag so that his/her teammate can catch it inside the cone. After tossing the beanbag, whether successful or not, the tosser runs and retrieves the beanbag from the catcher and runs it back to the next person on line. Play for a designated amount of time. The team with the most points WINS!!!

Another great Field Day Game - All you need for this game is hula hoops and some beanbags. Divide your class into teams; have teams line up behind a starting line with a bucket of beanbags for each team. Teams should be facing hula hoops that are placed an appropriate distance across the field for your specific grade level. When the whistle blows the first student from each line takes a bean bag from their bucket and tries to toss it inside of the hula hoop. If the beanbag lands inside the hula hoop the student gets a point for their team. After the first student takes his/her toss they move to the back of their team line, and the next child on the line tosses the beanbag. This continues until the whistle is blown to end the game; the team with the most points at the end is the winner or play until the team that gets to 10 points first is the winner!

Field Day Fun - Hula Hoop Roll

More Field Day Fun! All you need for this game is your students and some Hula Hoops. Divide students into teams. Each team has one hula hoop. Teams line up relay style facing a large area. When the whistle blows, the first person from each team rolls his/her hoop. As soon as the hoop falls down, the next student on line runs to the hoop and rolls it. As soon as the hoop falls down, the next student runs out. Play continues until one of the hoops passes a designated line. That team receives a point. Begin again from the start. Play for a designated amount of time. Whichever team has the most points when the time runs out is the winner!!!

Field Day Fun - The Sponge Toss

Field Day Games – This really fun game is a wet one sure to cool kids off from the outside heat. Have two rows of buckets lined up across from each other; fill one row of buckets with water and leave the other row empty. Each student gets a partner, one partner stands with the bucket filled with water and the other across from that student with the empty bucket. The child next to the bucket filled with water takes the sponge and dips it in the bucket, absorbing the water, then tosses it to their partner who is standing across the way with the empty bucket. The partner catches the sponge and squeezes the water into their empty bucket, then tosses it back. This process continues until the first team fills an empty bucket or until the whistle is blown and whichever team has the most water in their bucket wins!

Field Day Fun - Pizza Box Relay!

Here is another fun field day game. All you need is pizza boxes and gym cones. Separate students into even teams (or as even as possible) and line them up behind the cones. Across the field, you can pick the appropriate distance; there should be more cones with pizza boxes stacked next to them. Teams line up facing them. When the whistle blows the first person dashes across the field to their pizza boxes, they grab 1 pizza box and run it back to the next person on line. They hand over the 1 pizza box and proceed to the end of their team line, the person with the 1 pizza box now dashes across the field and grabs another pizza box and now runs back with 2 pizza boxes and gives it to the next person and continues to the back of the line. The next person dashes across the field with the 2 pizza boxes and grabs a 3rd pizza box to run back with. This continues until a team drops the boxes. The last team left that has not dropped their boxes or the team that carried the most boxes wins! You can change the level of the game to make it more challenging, for example younger students can carry the boxes with both hands while older students must hold the box with one palm hand up.

Field Day Fun - The Frisbee Pancake Flip

This is a great game that not only can be played outdoors, but indoors as well! To play this game you need to provide your students with a Frisbee and a bean bag. The bean bag should be a different color on each side or have a different symbol on each side. Students put the bean bags on the Frisbee. They each have one minute (or you can decide an appropriate time frame) to flip the bean bag into the air and then catch the bag in the Frisbee; it’s a good idea for each student to take a few practice flips before the competition begins to allow them time to be comfortable with the game. Once they begin; every time the bean bag is flipped and caught on the opposite side it started on the student earns a point. Example the bean bag has one side yellow and other side green, student begins flip with yellow side facing up and catches bean bag in Frisbee with green side facing up he/she earns a point. Try adding elements of the television show Survivor to Field Day. Organize activities in which the students work together in groups. Call these groups “tribes” and name them. In advance of your special day, have students create flags to represent their tribes. Decorate your event space with island flair, including unlit tiki torches. Encourage friendly and respectful competition between tribes. Remind youngsters to be supportive of their tribe mates with “Field Day Is Cool! Do Your Best, Cheer On Others” Ribbons. When everyone is ready to leave the island, distribute gifts from the “Field Day Is Cool!” Theme Kit.

Brightening The Day

In addition to promoting physical activity, use Field Day to generate class spirit. Within each grade level, assign each class a color, either blue, green, red, white, or yellow. Think of the name of a band that goes with each color, such as The Moody Blues or The White Stripes. Supply teachers with “Field Day Rocks!” T-Shirts in the color that their class has been given. Hand out “Field Day Participant” Paper Bracelets to students, also in the appropriate colors. Kick off Field Day with a pep rally in which classes sit together by color and cheer whenever their band name is mentioned. Play lively rock music to get everyone pumped up.

All Wrapped Up

Field Day isn’t too early in the year for mummies, not when it’s a mummy relay. Arrange students into teams of five and give each team a roll of white streamers. Explain that within each team every student will have a role to play: one will be the mummy, one will wrap the mummy’s leg in streamers,

one will wrap the other leg, one will wrap an arm, one will wrap the other arm, and the last person will wrap the body. Present “Field Day: Be The Best You Can Be” Water Bottles to the first team to cover its mummy with the entire roll. Balloons, Balloons Everywhere

Balloons can provide hours of entertainment and physical activity, but with little cost. Center your Field Day around balloons. Consider some of these games.

• See who can physically use their heads to keep balloons up in the air the longest.

• Award a prize to the person who can blow up a balloon the biggest without it popping.

• Create static electricity with balloons and see how many will stick to a person at once.

• Tie a balloon onto each ankle of the students; have them work together to pop the balloons.

• Put inflated balloons in a jumping castle for extra fun.

• See who can pop the most balloons in a set amount of time.

• Have students wear helium-filled balloons tied to their wrists; award prizes for keeping balloons intact all during Field Day.

• Challenge students to run races while holding a balloon between their knees.

• Organize a balloon volleyball tournament.

• Fill balloons with water and let students use them to play catch.

• Draw stars on some slips of paper, leaving others blank. Then put a slip into each balloon before inflating. Ask students to pop the balloons with their feet. Give prizes to students with stars on their slips of paper.

Animal Antics

Combine children’s love of animals with the need for physical activity. Begin with “Field Day Is Paw- Some!” Stickers to generate enthusiasm. Lead students in imitating wild animals. They could run on all fours like a cheetah, roar like a lion, climb around on a playset–aka monkey bars–like a primate, and pounce like a tiger. Expand the event by including insects and have children flap their “wings” like a butterfly, buzz like a bee, and wiggle like a worm. Let them know they did an excellent job with “Field Day Is Paw-Some!” Ribbons.

Going Green

Super States

Help children learn about some of our country’s states while exercising. Set up booths and decide on a state for each. Then hang up maps of the states as well as fun facts. Play games that incorporate something the chosen states are known for. Juggling oranges would be cute for Florida. Potato sack races and Idaho are a great pair. Relays while carrying containers of pennies would work for Illinois. Use “Field Day: Friends, Fun, & Fitness” Ribbon Bracelets to thank everyone for participating. Happy Hoopla

This year, put hula hoops to new uses by arranging several activities other than keeping them spinning. Lay the hoops on the ground, then have students toss bean bags into them. Also, organize a game of tag in which the person who’s “it” runs around with a hoop and tries to encircle someone else. Another idea is to hang the hoops from trees; challenge students to throw “Field Day: If You Had Fun, You Won” High Flyer Discs through them. At the end of the day, draw names to determine who keeps the discs. Present “Field Day Participant” Backpack Clip/Zipper Pulls to everyone else.

Movie Magic

Add an extra special spark to Field Day by naming each of your stations after a movie. Choose movies that you can tie an activity into. For example, basketball free throws for “Tournament Of Dreams” and soccer goals for “Bend It Like Beckham” would be appropriate. Outfit the adults in charge of the stations with “Field Day Rocks!” Staff T-Shirts . Hand out “movie tickets” to the students that they can bring with them to each station and receive a hole punch for trying the activity. End Field Day by giving out “Field Day Rocks!” Heat Sensitive Pencils and showing an uplifting children’s movie. Require completed tickets for admission.

No Field Day would be possible without the help of hardworking volunteers. So, at the end of the day, make sure you let them know how much you appreciate them. In the weeks prior to the event, ask students from each classroom to create thank-you cards for volunteers. At the closing of Field Day, hold a small awards ceremony for your special helpers. Give each volunteer a Field Day Personalized Baseball Cap with your school logo or a 1st Place Award Silicone Bracelet along with a thank-you card. Your volunteers will be delighted and your
students will be, too.

All Over The Place

Take children around the world on Field Day by making items from different cultures part of the day’s plans. Have children wear sombreros as they hop along in the sack race. Name that activity the Mexican Jumping Bean Race. Plan a China-themed relay race where children hand off fortune
cookies or chopsticks instead of batons. Present winners with 1st, 2nd And 3rd Place Class Ribbons . Give all other children Field Day Participant Award Ribbons with a space to write on the participant’s name.

Use Their Brains

While Field Day is a time for children to get physical exercise, it can also serve as a chance to exercise their minds. At the beginning of each event, have students figure out a simple problem or puzzle related to the upcoming activity. For instance, they could solve a simple math problem before starting the 50-yard dash. The question could be, “When Suzy crossed the finish line, Janie was five yards behind her. How far had Janie run?” The answer is 45 yards. When the child completes the problem or puzzle, give him or her a small gift, such as a “Field Day: Be The Best You Can Be” Sticker or Camouflage Dog Tag.

Working Together

Teach students that by working together they can achieve more. Do this by having them focus on teamwork this Field Day. Plan activities that require joint participation, such as Tug of War, relay races and wheelbarrow races. Encourage children to interact with classmates they don’t normally spend time with. When activities are completed, pass out “We’re All Stars On Field Day” Ribbons and “We’re All Stars On Field Day” Tattoos.

Music adds more fun to almost every event. So use it to make this year’s Field Day better than ever! Name each event after a popular musical group or performer, such as the Miley Cyrus Mile Dash or the Jonas Brothers Long Jump. Have CD players playing music at several different locations. Give students “Field Day,Rocks!” Plastic Stadium Cups and Rally Towels.
